What is Android?
Android is an Operating System based on Linux kernel.It was primarily designed for Touchscreen mobile devices like Smartphones or tablets. Inititally developed by android inc. which was later bought by google in the year 2005.It was unveiled in the year 2007.The first publicly available smartphone was HTC Dream on October 22 2008. Basically, android is and Operating system for a mobile phone.The software is open source which has attracted many companies to launch more and more mobile devices on android platform.
What is Open Source?
As google releases the source code for each android version a group of developers use this code and develop roms,mods for the existing android versions.These community-developed releases often bring new features and updates to devices faster than through the official manufacturer/carrier channels, albeit without as extensive testing or quality assurance.This is what makes android far better than Ios.A user can play around with this open source and then share it with other people too! Developers not only modify the aosp(Android Open Source Project) They even modify the roms which were released by other mobile manufacturing companies like samsung sony etc.We can even port few Roms from other devices or other mobile versions.
